This book is a fascinating addition to the list of books on the sad story of PQ17 and is worth reading if one is already familiar with the history of the convoy. The author, who is deceased, was a hostilities-only seaman on the requisitioned trawler, HMS Ayrshire, and he wrote this story just a few years after the event. It gives an interesting glimpse into life on board and covers the period from leaving Iceland, through the dispersal and the ship's eventual arrival in Archangel. Notes written by the author show how he intended to carry on with the story through to the ship's return to the UK. Sadly, he never did this and I was left left intrigued by these notes and what stories lay behind them. The author's writing has been brought to light by the efforts of one of his grandchildren and I wonder how many other small histories were written by participants in the war and whether many will also make it to print
