Smith bills the book as a “triography,” in that it tells the life stories of himself, of Fernando Vargas, his longtime companion, and of the Variety Recording Studio, which Smith and Vargas cofounded and ran for decades. The book has many strong suits. Smith loves nothing better than a good story, and the book discusses many interesting episodes in his (90 years and counting) life. Examples include receiving a graduate diploma at Columbia from university president Dwight Eisenhower, under whom Warren had served during World War II; having Martin Mull as a student while teaching high school in New Canaan, CT; having a romantic encounter in a bar with a man who may have been James Dean; vacationing in Cuba at the time of Castro’s ultimately successful revolutionary landing; bumping into John Steinbeck outside a Broadway theater; and having Paul Anka, Chubby Checker, Bobby Darin, Barry Manilow, Liza Minnelli, and Tiny Tim as clients at his recording studio. The structure of the book,... More > however, is a bit unwieldy, and the editing is uneven. This doesn’t detract from any of the good stories, but it does make it hard to follow the biography as a whole. And so I recommend dipping into the book a little at a time, for a fun story here and a bit of namedropping there, rather than reading it cover to cover.< Less
