JOURNAL TWO is, without a doubt, the most important volume of the seven that I've written about my life. It picks up my story on January 1, 1959, when I am thirty-three years old and an English teacher (Assistant Professor at Northeastern State College, Tahlequah, Oklahoma. I have been married to Bonita Pursiville for eleven years, and we have one child, a girl, Leslie Jean, born February 4, 1952. In quick succession we have three more children: Robert Christopher, Robert Christopher, on April 2, 1959, Holly Denise, on October 31, 1960, and John Jeffrey, on May 7, 1962. In that first year (of this volume), 1959, we were living in Jamestown Addition, an ideal neighborhood for raising a family. My ambition (since early childhood) was to become a writer; but in order to feed my rapidly-growing family, I had to earn a living--and teaching in high school seemed the best way for me to go. While at Tahlequah I completed a master's degree in English at Oklahoma A & M College, Stillwater;... More > and a doctor's degree in English education at the University of Tulsa. In 1964, for a number of reasons, I sign a contract to teach at Modesto Junior College, in California; but after only two years, primarily because we are homesick for the Midwest and anxious to return to a four-year college, I accept a position at Southwest Missouri State College, in Springfield, Missouri. Here we put down roots, buy eighty acres of trees that border the Mark Twain National Forest, build our dream home, a two-storey Cape Cod twenty-five miles from where I am teaching. Our children grow up and, for a time, each of the three younger ones join a different branch of the service. In 1972 Jeff is killed in an automobile accident, and this tragedy is followed by a break-up between Bonita and me.< Less
