Oct 15, 2009"A brave experiment, and it's alive!" Having worked with the author on many projects, I am intimately familiar with his works and his modus operandi. This book has been coming for some time. The way he is putting it forth is a bold "Crazy Ivan" move designed to shake up, wake up, some people. Eschewing his grandfathered-in status at iUniverse, where he put out his last three books, he has jumped with no advance warning (even to me) to Lulu.com to demonstrate the agility of the POD process and the way that existing publishing models can be overturned on the internet. Bravo! Now, to the book itself. No rational reader can argue against the quality of his works. And here, like a gauntlet thrown down, is his argument for immortality (an immortality I think he has already achieved, but let us give him this tilt, like a Prince of the Blood who demands he be allowed to joust). TRIUMPH is finally in print! No one breathes a greater sigh of relief than I. After having to... More > pull it from two previous books when iUniverse could not figure out how to publish it without line wraps, he solved the problem in about fifteen minutes. Bravo. And it is worth the price of the book, itself. If for naught else but his oft-quoted line "Horatius died a suicide, in some philosophies" set in proper context, like a Bible verse read not just as a sloganed quote. Cartouche is such a marvelous poem that every reviewer, editor and fellow-writer who has offered up a blurb for the book has made comment on it. Every one. It may become another of his signature works, along with The Unicorns, I rained poetry and from out of the city, all contained within with dozens others of his best metaphysical and romantic verses. And, now we come to Diogenes, long held to be the Loch Ness Monster of his "Black Catalog" (wherein he stores hundreds of works to be held until his death). Four hundred lines of philosophical and intimate revelation. At one time it was thought the poem would get a book all to itself. Here, it is given its due in the company of many timeless works. Perhaps, if this book, this collection, has a flaw, it is in the generosity of the author. There is none of the chaff, the fluff, the filler, we sometimes see in collections. Even musical artists tend to shoot for one or two "singles" singles on a CD, and often we are left with a dozen forgettable pieces. Here, unlike the author's celebrated but flaws "from an unexpected quarter", we get nothing but the prime flesh. It is, at times, overwhelming, like six hours of nonstop lovemaking. But also, wonderful. The fact that he is offering a pre-blurb edition, free of the jacket-hype most books have to fall prey to in order to market themselves, I think, is brilliant. And, I expect the day after he pulls this edition for the "blurbed" version, those individuals who bought copies of this edition will be watching eBay to see what they can expect to get for this limited edition. Having seen autographed copies of "PanthEon" (his last limited edition book) go for up to five times their cover price through online collectors, this might serve as practically a Dow Jones index of his market penetration and the militancy of his fans.< Less
