William Fritz’s “Organista Minimalista” is taking simplicity to the extreme. The Unmeasured Prelude uses a different way of writing out notes. Music students who don’t understand rhythm reading will find this easy. There is no need to count or keep a steady beat. The result is a cacophony of sound with overtones. The performance of each of these short pieces will vary depending the performer, the concert or church service when it is played, and the temperament or intent of the performer. Section two is an etude with a single measure with rhythmic syncopated in a one octave range. This is repeated with one slight change in each subsequent measure. The third section is a Toccata based on chord patterns moving in triplets and change slightly every two measures. A pedal melody is added after measure 8 using tonic, dominant and submediant for the first 11 measures. This wanders off into a modal melody of the same simple rhythm. The first pedal melody returns later. Near the end, the Bb in... More > the pedal confirms the myxolydian mode, but the final cadence uses the pentatonic scale and ends with a jazz 6th chord. This is a good technical study for finger dexterity. The fourth and final section seems to represent the ringing of the matin chimes. The work is very clever and I want to use some of these movements as organ technique studies.< Less
