I first met the author, LTC William “Rooster” Jones, when we met through a mutual friend, LTC Doug Jewell (Ret) on a trip to Key West, Florida. “Rooster,” to his friends, had just published his book, so I became interested in his story since I too have four combat tours in both Iraq and Afghanistan. In summary, without spoiling the book, Rooster volunteered for a year-long tour and takes you into the northern Afghan Hindu-Kush mountains and the dangerous Helmand Province in the south. He tells and presents his story through his own eyes and photos he personally took. Rooster captures his feelings, thoughts and memories for the entire year in hostile territory. This book tells the reader what it was like to be in a soldier's boots in that time and place. Totally enjoyable read for all service members, retirees and civilians. On a personal note, I revisited my own experiences while reading Rooster’s book. Remembering the friends I made, family and the people of Afghanistan in a place... More > embroiled in turmoil, politics and war. I recommend this book to anyone who is about to deploy to Afghanistan, or any combat zone. You can find this book at CreateSpace (color version) or (black and white version), it’s worth a read! W. ALLAN FREDERICKSON COL, MI, RETIRED< Less

Since my first assignment in Bosnia I read a lot of books dealing with so called “peace keeping” missions and I was really interested in the opinions of soldiers involved. I also read some books written by soldiers about Afghanistan. None of them attracted me. Most of them are a mixture of “war stories,” egocentricity and a very partial picture of Afghanistan. Not so yours! Your book is absolutely authentic! It reminded me a great deal of “The Diary of Anne Frank.” My copy of your book is now in poor shape, because many of my comrades at the German Air Force Academy went through it. You should think about publishing it in Germany… Alex Schiffers CAPTAIN German Air Force

This is the photographic journal of LTC William Jones, an American soldier who served a year in the Afghanistan war. His duties took him throughout Afghanistan, from the desolate and snow-covered peaks of the mountainous Hindu-Kush region, to the barren deserts of Helmand Province, the heartland of the Taliban and the most violent province in the country during this period of the war. For any reader who wants an honest, first-hand account of what life is like for an American soldier serving in a dangerous land far from home, this work will allow one to experience it through the eyes of someone who was there. The journal includes over 150 photographs taken throughout Afghanistan.
