In his debut novel- a meandering amalgamation of tales of family, their piece of dirt in the Piedmont of North Carolina, and time in the woods and stream- practicing dentist William Kelly turns to storytelling to share tales of coming of age and finding balance in life. Providence is, by the very nature of its author and his subjects, Southern Literature. The Huston family filled in the margins of Charlotte as pioneers, staying magnetically tied to their land through hardship and joy. In a broken and dreamlike recollection, the tales of three generations of Huston men are woven into a story that takes the reader through chronicles of outdoor adventure as the Hustons struggle to preserve the place that defines them and learn that in blood, history repeats itself. Between the lines of his story, Kelly displays an intuition about the nature of individual responsibility, faith, and friendship.
