In 1956, champion race horse Devon Loch suddenly collapses 50 yards before the finish while leading the Grand National Steeplechase in Aintree, England. In 1972 Jack Coyle, America's top miler, while on a world-record pace, falls in the final turn of the Olympic Trials 1500 meter final. In 1982 a man is on an alcoholic spiral towards self-destruction when his young daughter forms an inspirational connection between two fallen champions. Filled with guilt at his behavior during Vietnam and his brother's death in that war, Jack is nearing rock-bottom. After convincing her father to start running again, ten-year-old Laura Coyle encourages him to attempt an improbable comeback. Unexpectedly Jack forms a bond with Laura's youth track coach, Billy Wells, a wheelchair-bound Vietnam veteran. Their alliance launches the two men on an impossible two year journey whose destination is the 1984 Olympic Marathon in Los Angeles, California.
