This book was a great read. I couldn't put it down. The book follows the lives of homeless people in Venice Beach California. As you're reading it, you realize that these people are also human beings and have feelings - usually the idea of "homeless" has a negative connotation. Very interesting characters with colorful stories to tell. The author was able to gain a relationship with these people built on mutual trust. It's obvious by some of the stories in this book just how much the author (a college professor in the communications area)is respected. He treats the characters in his book the way he would like to be treated and doesn't differentiate. I've done further research on this book and the book's author and found them on Facebook (Bo Surferboy). On Facebook the author posts trailers of the videos he will be using in his documentary. Very highly recommended for all to read. It's nice to know that nowadays there are still people out there who truly care about those less... More > fortunate and are genuinely interested in becoming their friend and finding out who they are, aside from being a homeless person. Can't wait to see the documentary "Voices in the Sand".< Less

"Re: Re: Review" Yes, the book is very powerful! It would be very convinient if the book would be in Russian, because Russian speaking community is large in the US. Thank you.

I plowed through this book in about 3 hours, really interesting, devestatingly sad, and at times shocking, but most certainly eye opening. The format of this book is the Author telling specific stories about real people. He does not simply speak about the homeless population in general terms. He also does not spout off statistics, instead, the statistics are subtle and are used only to support his theories...thus allowing the reader to appreciate the individualities of the characters in the story. As it should be these characters are first and foremost, human beings. To the public, homelessness is an issue only seen when it is put in our faces, or when it becomes prominent during election campaigns. The violence, havoc and judgement the homeless endure from the external world and the internal struggles they face are heartbreaking. Having just experienced Venice Beach made this book all the more real to me. I have always felt a compassion for the homeless and have the strong urge to... More > help people but have never been in a position to do anything more then provide random acts of kindness. I will certainly make a concentrated effort to continue doing whatever I can as a result of reading this book. I strongly agree with the Author when he states that education is the key to change. And of course I agree with the Chief who's mantra is "First love and then peace will follow."< Less

"Homeless in Paradise" This book paints a vivid portrait of the lives of many different homeless souls. It was heartbreaking, funny, ludicrous, tragic, and heart warming. The author has a way of entering the inner world of people who have put up a big wall, makes them feel cared about, gets them to open up, and offers them hope. He has a remarkable gift. The author is a sensitive writer who reaches out to people we ordinarily avoid, provides a welcoming, safe, personal space for them to tell their stories, revealing their undeniable humanity. Venice Beach is a bizarre clash of worlds: a warm summer paradise of fun-loving tourists and party people who flock from all over, plus a magnet for lost homeless souls, ignored and rejected, discarded and barely tolerated. The book was quite moving and a real eye opener. It has inspired me to help the homeless in the little ways I can. From now on I'll make an extra sandwich when I go to the city so I can give it to someone who needs... More > it or bring some extra clothes to give away.< Less
