This is the score and parts for The Scrivener’s Tale of Southwark, a Medieval Interlude for Oboe(s) and Harp(s). Southwark was the point of departure for Chaucer’s tale-telling Canterbury pilgrims. Its proximity to foreign embassies made it a center for the scrivener notaries of the time who were required to know both civil law and foreign languages. But they may have had tales gleaned from personal experience and eavesdropping amongst foreigners ignorant of their linguistic skills. This is one of those personal tales. The beginning suggests a journey made in haste followed by a passage of drama and resolve. A sense of longing then leads to an ascendant triumph.
