William Strong, A.M. (d. 1654) was an active Westminster Puritan and a Reformed and Calvinistic minister.
Strong takes great pain and careful thought to demonstrate that Jesus Christ is God’s Shepherd from Zechariah 13:7, “Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man that is my fellow, saith the Lord of Hosts.” Three properties are explored showing Christ as a Shepherd. He is, 1) The Shepherd of souls, 2) The Great Shepherd and 3) The Good Shepherd. Strong shows how Christ is appointed by God to this position, and how he rules and feeds God’s flock in the position knowing He must give an account of them. This office lies in six things: 1) He seeks the flock, 2) He feeds them, 3) He takes care of them, 4) He heals them, 5) He defends them, and 6) He guides them.
This is an insightful and powerful treatise to encourage Christians to trust in the one true Shepherd.
