If you read one book this summer, or year, it should be this one. I came across the "Shining Rock Grand" quite by chance when I found it on the back seat of a friend's car. My friend's taste in literature has always been exquisite so I was intrigued. I took it with me on a business trip to the Far East and couldn't put it down. What we have here is a sprawling, deep and highly readable work of a powerful imagination. The author, William Winslow, works on a big canvas; a Tar Heel Tolstoy, where North Carolina is the setting for a complex story that spans the past to the near future and uncovers the paradoxical constancy of the human condition in a perpetually changing environment. At the center of the action is a singular character, Kay Pettaway, a tormented figure whose personality bars him from the common place yet essential things in life, even while possessing a special paranormal gift of "remote viewing", which various sharpies from venture capitalists and all... More > stripes of lawyers, to crusading doctors seek to use for their equally various ends. The writing is by turns vulgar to lyrical, but always vigorous, and always with an uncanny ear for the colorful North Carolina patois. This is a rare novel--don't miss it.< Less
