Resilient Leader is an engaging introduction into the principles of superior performance and state of mind found in traditional martial arts, particularly those from the Japanese tradition. The author, Winslow Swart, interweaves personal trials as a westerner with decades of uncommon immersion in Japanese culture and martial practices. By bridging two worlds, Swart wraps otherwise esoteric principles into practical, actionable tactics for warriorhood in many arenas. In perhaps a future edition, I look forward to richer detail around the personal crucibles that shaped his lifelong training and personal resiliency.

I'm currently deployed in Kandahar, Afghanistan attached to a Counter-IED unit. To say that the engagements here have psychologically and emotionally taken their toll on the soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen struggling to make it back home here is not just an opinion, it's an undeniable fact. Suicide, Depression, and PTSD rates are at a substantial high with this overall conflict recently surpassing Vietnam for length of dwell time. The concepts of the Resilient Leader, heavily resonant with Budo concepts like Fudoshin, Zanshin, and Mushin, strike a particularly deep chord with what it takes to manage a year long deployment with your whole being still intact. In fact, I think it's safe to say that these concepts would do well with any individual seeking to find a more balanced manner of living. Also, the way that Mr. Swart imparts these lessons primarily through example helps to relate the concepts in a much more efficient way. The only reason I've rated it as 4 instead of 5... More > would simply be that it's too short :P. However, one could also argue that good writing is all about compression and being concise, cutting to the heart of the matter as opposed to adding too much extraneous ideas. All-in-all a good book though.< Less
