When Chris and Mary (Peachy) tied the knot, they could have quit the business. She had inherited millions. It would’ve been safer. But they both live on the challenge and risk and chance of failure in private investigations. I hope you met them in Portrait of Valor by the same author. She’s high tech and intuitive and he’s ex-Marine and street smart with connections from Hollywood to D.C. They’re both brave, tough and crazy about each other. The characters in this novel are noble but flawed, still hurting from parent-inflicted wounds, at times vulgar, tempted to violence, frustrated, but making mostly good choices. An old friend and partner is accused of murder on the studio lot where the Tar Pit movie is being filmed. Just like its LaBrea namesake, this Tar Pit sucks in one victim after another, relentlessly, horribly, despite heroic efforts. Police and FBI are mystified. It takes the outsider efforts of Chris and his small team to ferret out clues, eliminate false leads and... More > ultimately call the vengeance of the real murderer onto themselves. DeVoon writes about the world of filmmaking and law enforcement with the down to earth realism of beat cop and key grip, of NCIS Station Chief and Film Studio Producer. He’s got all of the details in place so you can sweat with fear or wince with pleasure alongside his characters. The love and sex this couple shares is realistically erotic, appropriate to the unsheathed violence that is happening around them. The realism makes the potential loss of one or the other both more possibly tragic and more tragically possible. I was scared for them. This is a tough novel about a world with real evil in it that requires tough choices by ordinary individuals with lives and loves to lose. Without a commitment from citizens like these, every day, the fabric of our civilized cooperative effort at community would quickly disintegrate.< Less
