Roofing systems and maintenance products have come a long way in the last few years, with high performance bitumen felt membranes now providing a useful life of up to 20 years. Traditionally, bituminous flat roofing used felts made from rag fibre or glass fibre, which were bonded together in two or three layers, using bitumen heated to over 200ºC in a large pot. This method requires highly skilled operatives and can be dangerous in the hands of inexperienced applicators. The problem is that the old traditional bitumen rag felt ages quickly, it becomes brittle, and easily damaged due to weathering. Repairs can always be made to extend the life of the roof for a short while, but in the long run, a complete re-covering is the only real answer. Built-up felt remains by far the most popular form of roofing for domestic extensions, and properly installed, using high performance materials and correct installation, this form of roofing can provide a long term waterproofing solution.
