These lecture notes, intended for first-year university physics students, result from many teaching years at the University of Fribourg. They try to bridge the gap between courses in general physics and in mathematics. The first part concerns the concepts of reference frame and coordinate systems, the mechanics of the point mass, the Newton's gravitation theory, and the rigid body motion. The second part presents some elementary aspects of vector calculus, discusses simple applications of the continuity, Bernoulli’s, and Navier-Stokes equations. It introduces the fundamental Coulomb, Biot-Savart, and Faraday’s law; studies the circulation and flux properties of the electric and magnetic fields and derives the Maxwell’s equations. The last chapter offers a short introduction to special relativity. About 100 problems with their solutions allow for a deeper learning of the various subjects treated .
