"BOOK REVIEW - 'WORLD RELIGIONS TRUE BELEIFS AND NEW AGE SPIRITUALITY'" AN APPRAISAL (My personal view) BOOK REVIEW – TITLE 'World Religionst True Beliefs And New Age Spirituality' 435 pages Author:Xavier William The author has dared to go where angels fear to tread. The content matter of the book could easily be termed as sensational, daring and at the same time fascinating. One would imagine that all the fanatic and fundamental elements of all religions would make a beeline to issue a thousand ‘fatwas’ against the author. The author has painstakingly made a thorough research on his topic. For a layperson to do so, it is quite mind-blowing. Not many students and professors of Philosophy and Theology would know so much. If the author were a well-known figure, he would have been awarded a doctorate straight away for this thesis on world religions. Some of us may find the contents blasphemous and shocking, but I personally respect the author for his views because they are... More > borne out of a truthful conviction. For him it is a matter of his own conscience. The greatest lesson I learnt is that we must continuously bring out the Adult in us. While the author condemns ‘conditional thinking’ he gives due recognition to saints like Mother Teresa and Damien the Leper. In his personal life he creates space for even those who hold the opposite line of thinking, he writes on page 132: “My wife is deeply religious and does not miss a Novena. The differences in outlook between my wife and me have not affected our mutual love in any way." Hence, though the author may be an agnostic and we may not, we can still respect one another and live in perfect harmony. In the lines that follow on the same page, he rightly condemns hypocritical behaviour: “On the other hand, I have come across church-going couples who are not on speaking terms.” The author is on a truthful mission to eradicate all forms of fascism and fundamentalism that are the main cause of so much bloodshed of innocent people on this planet. He also presents poignant examples of the agonies that people go through in day to day life, all in the name of irrational sanctions from the religions they profess. Read the following on page 275: ‘Towards the end of 2003, a bizarre incident came to light in Kerala, in the district of Malappuram, in an area, where the population is wholly Muslim.’ …… The book definitely helps to change ones outlook.
