I've been following this guy's works on and off for a few years now, and he continually manages to impress. And it's all his creation; maps, cover artwork, and the works inside included. A wholly unique world with intrigue and dissension, mystery and mayhem, and with a whole slew of cultures painting the world in the truly magnificent scale it belongs as a true masterpiece of fictional work. Characters, flawed and human in their portrayal, cover the landscape on both the protagonist and antagonist sides of the gallery. You do yourself a disservice if you don't give this author's storytelling a try, and with this as a definitive release of this story and an introduction into the world of Calopa, this is a highly recommended book to pick up - I myself have picked this up for the third time now, and plan on keeping this book until it falls apart on me.

How can I possibly begin to review a collection so immersive and so detailed? Countless hours have slipped through my book-clad fingers; happily lost in a world so beautifully and lovingly crafted with characters you will genuinely fall in love with (even if you love to hate them). This collection also includes GORGEOUS maps and short stories to help you dive deeper into the world! Buy this book. Read it again and again. Be happy!

This is one of the best books I have ever had opportunity to purchase. Xero has managed to not only create an entire world from scratch, (to include a ruling Government), he has done so while keeping the characters believable and lovable. From beginning to end I was on the edge of my seat in non-stop action and intrigue. The hand-drawn maps are beautifully done and really lend to the story. The accompanying short stories flesh out the history of the main book quite well.If you are a fan of the 'Steampunk' genre, you owe it to yourself to pick this up. If not, get it anyway. I honestly feel you will be pleasantly surprised.

I only recommend what I A) enjoy and B) would buy myself. I bought "The Rhyme of the Golden Aegis" (the primary story in this book) three times as an E-book, the first edition print in paperback. Now I own it in hard cover. It is well constructed with beautiful cover art. The maps that are included, along with the glossary and timeline in the back, really help flesh out this wonderful clockwork world. Taking the initial information from the story, which was enough to understand what was needed for said story, and explaining some of the Why's more. Take that with the additional short stories set in the same world and you can really immerse yourself. But it isn't all spoiled, more then enough is present to satisfy the curious, yet leaves the true archaeologist, anthropologist, and bookworm types wanting to know more. The stories themselves are well worded in the same manner, always giving you enough information and then some. However, they never rob your imagination, nor your... More > curiosity to learn more. It also tells a complete, yet incomplete tale. The book is part of a larger trilogy but rather than just ending and leaving you with a dozen cliff hangers and feeling like maybe you should have waited for everything to already be out. You finish the novel and feel like you actually finished a story. Yet again, though, there is just enough there to leave you wanting more. Xero's dedication to his craft is evident, from cover art to the actual stories. He invites you into the world he created. As you read you will find an avenue to travel down be it history, culture, technology, or the lives of a crew and their ship. Finally just like his signature style of leave enough information and some extra to keep the curious, curious. I feel there are plenty of parts that make you wonder more about the author as well and his influences. Is he a fan of this or that because X part feels reminiscent of Y. I can not recommend this novel enough. I truly believe most who are on the fence but are willing to try something new will be pleasantly surprised and happy with their purchase. I'm not a huge steampunk type genre fan, but this...I can, and clearly did, get behind this.< Less
