Between Rechters, David Levy’s latest book, is a highly personalized exploration in which what might be called “the meaning of death” is central. Noting that he is sandwiched, as it were, between his maternal grandfather who died in the Holocaust because he was a Jew and his son who died while a member of the Israel Defence Force defending Jews, Rabbi Levy takes us on a multifaceted, multi-textured ride through his astounding mental countryside. Our guide has planned this trip via lookouts from which we can see into his views on issues as diverse as walking in the woods in West Virginia, alternate interpretations of the story of Abraham’s being ordered to sacrifice his son, the effect on the observer/interpreter of the observational/interpretational process, changes in the Christian churches post-Holocaust, the true meaning of the Jews’ return to Israel and, as already mentioned, death itself and its role in creation. En route, in addition, there are commentaries on Nabakov,... More > Nietzsche, Kafka (and his cockroaches), Freud, Socrates and their thinking. Oh and I should also mention that his discussions of the prospects of peace in the Middle East and the proper relationship between different religions, while brief are also well worth the read. Rabbi Levy has written this book in his own individualized style. It is, by turns, serious, funny, heartwarming and depressing. Sometimes loquacious, sometimes cryptic. Sometimes academic in tone, sometimes colloquial. There is no doubt in this reviewer’s mind: This is a book well worth the reading. You’ll either agree or disagree with the author – you’ll not be left unaffected and you'll not put the book down without feeling the need to contemplate what you’ve read further.< Less
