[2nd Eition and Chinese Version are available now.] Did you ever hear about Mao's era from a countryside resident, a beautiful village girl? I reckon the answer is no. Meinia was a pretty and compassionate village girl in Xishuangbanna, China. Responding to Mao's call, five members of the so-called Zhi-qing ("educated youth" or high school students and graduates from cities) came to her village. She and other villagers did their best to help the Zhi-qing, but these "not-educated-nor-useful" Zhi-qing inflicted huge and lasting hurt and pains on her and the villagers, …… Filling up with songs of young people, and full of wisdom of an oriental minority culture, this is a bright love-story book for readers of all ages. This is also an informative book for readers who have interest in the diversity of Chinese culture, and who are planning a visit to southern China. The Author was born in a small village in southern China and had been living there for 17... More > years, most in Mao’s era.< Less

"The One-Tree Grove" This is a rich and detailed account of a young girl from a small village in southern China, who goes on to do great things with her life, all the while maintaining her integrity and heritage. Not only does this story give insight into the political, educational and economic climate in China in the 1970s, but we learn about the culture and daily life of the Dainese people in vivid detail. The Dainese are a kind, giving and humble people, with unique traditions, living in an exotic countryside with many natural beauties. The author has a gift of telling the story with an honesty and familiarity that induces the reader to care about the Dainese people and their fate.

"Review by Hong Shang, Columnist and Commentator" Oct. 2, 2007 Weaving the unique customs, unbelievable tales and twisty destiny of the time into the moving and beautiful picture, the author leads the reads to the remote garden of mystery – Xishuangbanna in the southwest border of China. Using the metaphor of “one-tree grove,” the author explores the eternal subject of love and hate between males and females. This novel demonstrates the author’s spirits of humanity and culture, and the deep love of the author’s native land. And it is heart touching.
