The inspiration for this project arose from a discussion of the common cliche' of the use rasterized and low resolution type in kitsch graphic ephemera. Rather than denounce it, the team decided to use it as a spring board for this project and provoke questions; what does rasterized type blown out of proportion in scale look like ? How does this scale shift affect the carefully drawn curves of the glyph ? At what scale does the shape of the character lose its identity and turn into a blob of pixels ? To answer these questions, the glyphs of Akzidenz-Grotesk were put through a long drawn torture digitally, and then taken into the physical space as a 10ft X , 10ft installation and created on a grid using hemispheres cast in varying tonal range as pixels.
