The Taijiquan Classics
Hardcover, 782 Pages

Taijiquan is one of the most widely practiced and least understood martial arts in the world. Many people no longer practice Taijiquan as a martial art. Of those who do, few outside of China have had the opportunity to read and understand the Classics of Taijiquan as the canon of the art. If there were scriptures pertaining to Taijiquan, the Classics would be those. The Taijiquan Classics serve as a fundamental reference for all serious students of Taijiquan. For non-Mandarin speakers, this book is the first complete compilation of the Classics in English, including clear and precise explanations of the essential concepts of Taijiquan. The Classics provide deep insight into Chinese culture generally, with descriptions of the teachings of Daoism that have guided a people over millennia. We hope that readers of this material will appreciate the depth of its content and the effort that was required to bring it to the level of clarity provided within.

Mar 9, 2017This is one of the most important contributions to the English language canon on the subject of Taijiquan. Period. I am grateful for the amazing work by Zhang and his co-authors.
Jun 24, 2016Words alone cannot adequately describe this marvelous work. Properly, it takes words plus experience. Nevertheless, this work makes a modern day classic of the highly important past classic teachings of Chinese mainland boxing art known as taichichuan. It is simply a must read for those interested in the full development of the art on any level, regardless, of course, of family style. If Professor Douglas Wiles' eye opening, fascinating work on the so-called "Lost Classics of the Late Ch'ing Dynasty' gave us a brief peek into an estimate of the history and sociology of the taichi boxing practice, Zhang's compilation and translation is the next step in the Western evolution of the knowledge of its history and practice. Peter Capell, disciple and assistant to Mr. Zhang, describes his traverse toward Zhang and his real practice as passing through several arts, such as Jeet Kune Do and Shotokan Karate, before finally arriving at a true taichichuan martial artist in Master Zhang Yun.... More > Like so many others, i also traversed from Shotokan Karate with Sense Charles Collingsworth and Master Hidetaka Nishiyama and later a version of Hung Gar boxing and various versions of taichi practice before finally arriving at the great Wu Yuxiang family old frame practice with my WYX family master and practice leaders and friends. I don't know, perhaps some experience is required with a variety of fellow learners in order to fully appreciate finally arriving at appreciation of true teaching with a true master. Regardless, Master Zhang Yun and his students and colleagues have provided us with an incomparably profound and important work for new students as well as long term students of the taichi boxing art. In addition to the important advice provided by these translations, Master Zhang offers heretofore seldom seen important explanations behind the teachings and adepts involved with the development of these classics. Although, slightly expensive, the work is a must resource for any serious student of taichichuan. The old adage certainly applies here: 'you get what you pay for.' This is a true treasure and a bargain at twice the price. Thank you Master Zhang, et al.< Less
May 31, 2016Some may say it's bad form for someone listed on the book cover to write a review, but as this book demanded four years of my own effort and many more of my teacher's - I have to say that the struggle was worth it. There won't be another such book in 100 years. Sounds like a boast - perhaps it is - but the probability of anyone having the resources intellectual and otherwise to create such a masterpiece in that time frame is very unlikely. Indeed, I would like to be wrong in that assertion, as the next twenty years may mark the end of "original Taijiquan." This book should be of interest not only to any and all martial artists, but also to westerners seeking insights into the "vasty deep" of Chinese culture. Please read our book - you won't regret it.
