Seven years ago, Benny, a small town in the deep green of the Tennessee mountains, drove away bluegrass prodigy Caleb Grady by it’s smothering obsession with his gift for the banjo. Now, Caleb is returning to Benny, hoping to right past wrongs. It isn’t easy, and things seem worse than before. Most of the town has grown to despise Caleb for running away, and during his long absence, Colm Flynn, a mean and jealous man, fulfilled their need and his own insatiable ambition by becoming Benny’s new bluegrass idol. Vainglorious, and envious of the young prodigy, Colm hates Caleb and wants nothing more than to see him ruined for good. With the help of two troublemakers, he makes violent plans to run him out of town again. Caleb soon realizes that he must either leave town--and his few friends, his ex-girlfriend, and, more importantly, a son he never knew he had--or confront Colm, and with him practically all of Benny, in a challenge that he never thought he would have to face.
