It is said that had Descartes written the Bible, he would have done so backwards, omitting every ninth verse- a fact which must have been foremost in the mind of Mr Krishna as he wove together the intricate incantation which is this slender tome. Rather than a brilliantly argued philosophical treatise, however, the author offers us 1001 ways of looking at life through a series of coloured cellophane sweet wrappers. A key concept in Krishna is his distinction between what he calls the Gnostic Whirl and the concept of the Chocolate Soldier. The first of these applies to inanimate objects in the world; the latter describes the condition of intricacy. Our consciousness is always consciousness of intricacy. Or maybe it isn’t. The fact that we can use our minds to determine the presence or absence of something gives us huge potential, but the objects of the world are simply the intricate objects of what he calls ‘tomorrowness’: `essence before existence'. Instead of agonizing about the... More > nature of *this*, Herr Krishna expounds a whole lot of *that*. The effect is startling, demanding, life-enhancing and ultimately satisfying, like the controlled release of trapped wind.< Less
