Sep 7, 2008"Journey into Being" This is a most thought provoking and insightful look at one persons search for truth, happiness, and a peaceful life. Written over a 30 year period it shows the search in all its aspects. A very readable book with great depth and help for anyone seeking their own path. 6 stars

Feb 8, 2006"Interesting, but not intriguing" This book, which is a collection of thoughts and meditations spanning numerous years, sums up this author's take on life. There are poems and mini-essays, and generally a collection of soul-outpourings that strive to give a reader a sense of greater perspective of the world. Unfortunately, that perspective turns out to be a bit shallow in its execution. While some of the avenues of exploration are very interesting, none really explore outside of places we've already visited in our own lives. Outside of the usual philosophy that floats through the ear while on a lazy canoe trip, there's little else here that warrants serious contemplation. And that's unfortunate - especially because some of the headlines are so interesting that they beg the pages to be turned. For example, take the portion on "Improvements" as well as some scattered poems: after reading these little notions, a reader almost feels disappointed and abandoned that... More > more ideas on the topics haven't been shared, especially since we've been invited into someone's else's philosophical nest. The writing is generally clean, although it's often too comma-happy in many places. This becomes a problem when the thoughts lean towards the profound - we're about to be delivered a great idea, but nope, we have to pause. This breaks some great intellectual momentum the book begins to stir. The internal layout is passable, although a size 14 font is a bit questionable. There's no real reason to spread the text over more pages than necessary, and all this does is jack up the price by Lulu which has to be beared by the buyer in the end. As for the cover, a bit more attention should be given to the finer details. The off-centered title resembles an oversight rather than an artistic overture. Plus the use of purple text on a dark background is simply unforgivable - not to mention unreadable. Overall, it's understood that these thoughts are a collection of blog or journal entries, but that doesn't mean the author couldn't have expanded on them, perhaps adding in modern takes on the presented subjects, or even adding new ones altogether. For someone as intelligent and observational as this writer, a great deal more should be expected than the cliched philosophy offered by this book - perhaps we'll get a real intellectual treat once the next edition comes out?< Less
