This is a small booklet one of my grad students developed for her work at the University of Missouri. Zeinab is from Iran and is studying here along with her husband. Much of Zeinab's work deals with the idea of displacement - a kind of cultural and personal diaspora - represented by layered elements of the collage work she does. In this book, she's showing some of the early pieces she made. It's a body of work that has now grown to dozens of works and moved far beyond the slick American magazine pages seen here. By contrasting the mass-media, mass-produced, ad-laden pages with the shapes and layering that recalls her experiences in Iran, Zeinab is attempting to display cultural and emotional distance, upheaval, and transition. I'm proud to have helped her work through some of these issues. The text is presented in English and in Farsi, and the book works in both directions, depending on which language you're reading.
