A poem must speak in multiple layers Each layer must speak honestly in truth Formal rules are only meant as tools Used in skillful hands enriching the form Sometimes the beauty of the wild water Sometimes the ease of a canalled stream Freedom to flow, shaping rocks to pebbles Raging in canyons, an ever changing path A poem must shape the imagination Like the waters shape the riverbank Flooding the mind with cruel force Bursting out in rage and extravagance And then suddenly smoothing in rest Speaking calmly to the heart, easing Offering kindness to the innermost Water calls to water, deep calls to deep
