This piece features extended... More > natural harmonics across the strings, revolving around the transitional possibilities of moving from full left hand pressure on the string to a light touch at any given point.

This is used to create shifting, textural blocks of sound as pitches are transformed and passed from instrument to instrument, always following the logic of the string’s natural harmonic series.

The notation used in this score is simple and intuitive, blending traditional notation with graphic time elements.

Because of the inter-dependence of parts, all performers play from the full score. There are no separate parts for this piece. This score may be copied as necessary to produce performance parts for ensemble undertaking this piece. < Less

River Rock Semaphore (2006) for percussion ensemble is loosely based on the sounds of a rocky shoreline. Waves that break on... More > a rocky beach create an incredibly thick flurry of clicking as they move and deposit rocks, adding to the already rich soundscape associated with moving water. In this textural piece, patterns of stone clicking move slowly around the space along with other, more resonant sounds. In the distance, horn players with conch shell trumpets call to one another periodically, capturing the idea of communication over distance associated with water throughout human history. < Less

Unity is a piece for any number of violists, who perform while walking very slowly around a circular score with a diameter... More > of ten feet. The score contains a single continuous staff. This piece is meditative, revolving around phrases that arc in and out against a drone on middle C, and since the performers are always moving, it also produces a visual choreography like a slow dance. As a large circular score, Unity is intended to be read by players both on the inside and outside of the circle. This is an adventurous, interesting, but also broadly appealing piece of new music that would be eminently suited for a studio recital, viola party, or other settings such as an art show opening. < Less
