There were many haulage companies operating in the Wakefield area, in the 1950/60s., and many were owner drivers, who... More > prospered and became the owners of very large enterprises themselves. My own company
Walkers of Wakefield was one, Jackie Hanson of
R Hanson & son was another, D Wrigglesworth of Dewsbury another, Jack Robinson of
A One Transport another. The redoubtable Peter Slater of Gildersome was another, Fred Chappell who once sold me an old fire engine another, and of course there were also two other old friends of mine Frank Hensby, and his son Richard who built up a large fleet of tippers, and created the VW & Man Truck dealerships in Wakefield. Quite a formidable crew, and there were oh so many more like them. Who through personal sacrifice, persistence, and dedication, built there Empires too.
They and their likes should never be forgotten, and this is just my attempt to try and ensure that they aren't. < Less

A Tribute To That Great Yorkshire Dialect Poet. John Hartley. These extracts are taken from some of his Clock Almanacks The... The brave colliers of Tow Moor, the gallant Lifeboat men at Whitby, all and each have known what it is, to feel the warm words of this famous poet of the Yorkshire dialect, as he sang their praises far and wide. What a quality this man had, what a happy smile, in all his beautiful writings. . John Hartleys name was to become an household word in Yorkshire and indeed throughout the country. Classic And Vintage Commercial Magazine
If you want to live in reality and have an entertaining read, then this is a book... More > for you.
Starting in the 1930s as an impoverished schoolboy, C G Walker worked the hard way up the ladder in the haulage industry, before ending up with a sizeable operation of his own. OK, we have all read memories before, but not quite like this one 'The human element of this book is fascinating, and so much of what is recalled is typical of what went on in the transport industry - there is no beating about the bush here! I felt so at home reading this book that I did not want to put it down, it just sucks you in like a good novel should. The section called 'The Lessons Learned In My Life' is well worth reading and if you want to make it in this world, it is certainly a great inspiration!
This book most definitely does make compulsive reading.
