An Apology to W. Tyndale
By George Joye, Edward Arber
Paperback:
$6.49
Ships in 3–5 business days
Only ships from North America
In 1526, William Tyndale produced the first printed English translation of the New Testament. One of his colleagues was... More > George Joye who reprinted Tyndale's translation in 1531 with a few of his own changes. For one, He disagreed with Tyndale's use of the word "resurrection" in several passages and replaced it with his own wording.
These changes upset Tyndale and led to a sharp dispute between the two men. Tyndale and Joye both made strong accusations about the other which ultimately led Joye to pen this apology in 1534 which still defends his positions and still charges Tyndale with not making adequate edits to the translation. In 1536, William Tyndale was tried for heresy and put to death for translating the Bible into English. Although Tyndale and Joye disagreed sharply on a few translational decisions, they both stood up to free God's word and to make it available to the common people in their own language. < Less |
