What’s it for?

This collection is taken off the shelves and pegs and hooks in my writing toolshed.
It is not piled in... More > here neatly, to any well defined system. It is arranged, or not arranged at all, just like the stuff you will find in any toolshed.
It should serve the same sort of function as all proper sheds. A place of refuge from more conventional activities where one can unwind quietly and be just a bit outside the mainstream of the business and jangle of real life.
It is meant be read in just the same way as you would rummage around in a shed. Having a look at this and that without any ordered plan and certainly without any pressure to press on and finish things quickly.
The index is a bit of a concession to help remind you, if you want it to, where you were last time. < Less

More > It was probably created on the orders of Sir John Trelawny, the first baronet, whose father bought the estate from Queen Elizabeth.It is a snapshot of its period whose oldest document is dated 1374. This edition is for the convenience of researchers, historians and those with an interest in how things were ordered in those days. It include details of customs, rentals and tenancies of the estate.
The spellings in the body of the book are transcribed faithfully. Consistency in this regards seems not to have been a major preoccupation at that period.
Appended to this copy of the original book, at the end, are six extracts of previously unpublished family papers. < Less
