The reflections in this book are culled from The Peace Books. Unlike the Peace Books, which jump in and out of the frying... More > pan, this book attempts to remain in the pan and concentrate the heat on the chaff (i.e the language of complacency/war) so that it might be more easily discerned and separated from the wheat (i.e. the language of peace).

My intent with this book, is that it will help us to be mindful of the subtle ways we perpetuate violence in our lives on a daily basis, causing us to forget how to deepen our practice of peace. < Less

This is the sixth (and final) book in a series of books that represent my efforts to comprehend the language of peace. It's... More > clear to me that as a child, I didn't acquire much fluency with peace as a first language. Thus, the first book of the series is entitled, Peace as a Second Language. Peace may never become my primary gestalt, but with enough study and patient practice, I may be able to apprehend the sound of its two-cents-worth clanking with some consistency into the bottom of my cup.
As I understand it, the vocabulary of the language of peace consists of any and every situation where our big willingness to narrow meaning (and become exclusive) is transformed by a little willingness to broaden and deepen meaning (and become inclusive). The syntax of the language of peace is clarified with every and any effort we make to break down the mentalities that turn permeable or semi-permeable borders for exchange, into impermeable boundaries. (Thus, the embargo reference in the subtitles.) < Less

A Witness For Peace Delegation Reflection
"Roots of Migration and Marginalization"

More than a dozen years after the... More > passage of NAFTA what are the impacts of a free trade agreement between a developing country and the world’s largest economy? This was ten-day delegation, where we experienced, first hand how U.S. economic policies impact Mexicans and “push” them to cross the border illegally. We, now, better understand the role of corporate globalization has on the indigenous community. We will be in Mexico during a pivotal time. The Zapatista-initiated “Other Campaign” just ended and the Presidential elections happened. This delegation was exciting, educational, and most of all, transformational. < Less

Oaxaca's indigenous communities have been struggling for dignity, sovereignty, and survival since the arrival of the Spanish... More > conquistadors. Last summer a teacher's strike sparked a broader uprising, tapping into Oaxaca's strong traditions of resistance. For a brief moment, the struggle held the world's attention as federal and state police fought with the movement for control of the state's capital. Though the world's attention has shifted away from Oaxaca, neither the popular movement nor the issues that sparked it have gone away. [Color Photos] < Less
