Playtests were made using both 20mm and 28mm figures, and rules used were Soldat, Final Combat, Arc of Fire, Face of Combat, Rules of Engagement, Battleground, Nuts, Seven Brothers, and various sets of house rules.

Unlike the great majority of wargame rules for this period, Soldat concentrates on the role of the infantryman. Combat in both World Wars rapidly became a series of vicious, small unit actions, a classic confrontation at close quarters with no holds barred. As in most wars, the dirty business of winning battles fell to the infantryman.
