Song Cycle: In the summer of 1820 a fourteen-year-old boy named Joseph Smith Jr. walked into a grove of trees in upstate New... More > York to pray. Prompted by a verse from James that stated "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God...", Joseph intended to ask which church he should join himself with. When he knelt to pray, he felt as though he was being assailed by an unseen power that wished to destroy him, yet no sooner did he lift up his voice to God than he felt himself delivered and saw a glorious light descend around him. "A Light that Shames the Noonday Sun" is based upon this visionary experience of Joseph Smith Jr.,and was written in celebration of Smith's 200th birthday. The work was premiered 12/23/05 by Dr. Lawrence Vincent, head of Brigham Young University Opera. < Less

Cycle of 5 songs: "C.S. Lewis, perhaps the greatest Christian apologist of the 20th century and author of the popular... More > children's book series, "The Chronicles of Narnia," considered George MacDonald his mentor and spiritual guide. MacDonald himself was an Anglican minister for a time, but was forced to give up the ministry because of his radical beliefs. He is best known for his fairy tales, but also wrote many sermons, books and some poetry. "The Diary of an Old Soul," MacDonald's largest poetic work, consists of 365 four-line stanzas, one for each day of the year. These poems deal mainly with MacDonald's strife in reconciling himself to God. Out of these pleadings I have selected a number of stanzas that speak to me. They are primarily about life, death, rebirth, beauty and the power of creation. "Leafs from the Diary of an Old Soul" was composed mainly in 2003 with some revision in 2004." - M. Ryan Taylor < Less

Cycle of Seven Songs : "Whimsical, macabre, deeply spiritual: the poetry of Vachel Lindsay has long attracted me for it's... More > wild variety, lyric sensability and deep emotional impact. Although made famous by such poems as "The Congo" and "General William Booth Marches into Heaven" (the title poems for the anthologies from which "The Moon Songs" were selected), I have been attracted mainly to his more concise poems 'in which the moon is the principle figure of speech.' These poems explore human perspective, Linday's hypothesis being that 'the moon is a mirror' in which we find what we bring. Lindsay wrote many of these moon poems and it was difficult to choose between so many fine poems. In the end, I based my selection on variety, dramatic contrast and a progression towards my own view of the moon, one that is spiritual." - M. Ryan Taylor < Less

Abinadi has only one convert in the court of Noah, Alma, but that one convert goes on to have a huge impact on the rest of the nation. The story is a testimony to the power one good person can have upon society, even if they may not see the fruit of their own labors. < Less

Song Cycle: La Belle Dame sans Merci (trans. The Beautiful Lady without Mercy) is one of Keats' most famous poems and tells... More > the tale of a young knight who is bewitched one springtime by a seductive fay. The knight gladly succumbs to the fairy's charms, is 'kissed to sleep' but then encounters a very troubling dream. Upon waking he finds that he is alone, spring and summer have fled away, and he is left to answer the probing questions of a passerby on the 'lone hillside.' The poem became a favorite subject for visual artists in the British Isles, particularly among the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. One of those paintings, a work by Waterhouse, was the inspiration for this song cycle. < Less
