This dissertation discusses the development of an improved method for the static and dynamic analysis of driven piles for both forward and inverse solutions. The finite element routine developed was... More > a three dimensional model of the hammer, pile and soil system. Soil properties were aggregated to simplify data entry and analysis. The three-dimensional model allowed for more accurate modeling of the various parts of the system and phenomena. Soil layering was flexible and could either follow the grid generation or be manually input. The forward method could either model the hammer explicitly or use a given force-time history, analyzing the pile response. The inverse method used an optimization technique to determine the aggregated soil properties of a given layering scheme. In both cases the static axial capacity of the pile was estimated using the same finite element model as the dynamic method and incrementally loaded. The results were then analyzed using accepted load test interpretation criteria.< Less

This is a combination of two authoritative documents on this vital subject. Federal Guidelines for Dam Safety (FEMA 93): These guidelines apply to management practices for dam safety of all Federal... More > agencies responsible for the planning, design, construction, operation, or regulation of dams. They are not intended as guidelines or standards for the technology of dams. Safety of Dams—Policy and Procedures (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers ER 1110-2-1156): This regulation prescribes the guiding principles, policy, organization, responsibilities, and procedures for implementation of risk-informed dam safety program activities and a dam safety portfolio risk management process within the United States Army, Corps of Engineers (USACE). The purpose and intent of this regulation is to ensure that responsible officials at all levels within the Corps of Engineers implement and maintain a strong dam safety program in compliance with “Federal Guidelines for Dam Safety.”< Less
The Ten Weeks: A Novel By Don C. Warrington
eBook (ePub): $4.99
In 1970 "sex, drugs and rock 'n roll" ruled supreme in Point Collina, a tony beachside resort. No where was that more true than at the local high school, and that scene was ruled by Denise... More > Kendall, tennis captain and daughter of the most prominent man around. But this happy life of "peace and love" was rudely interrupted when Madeleine des Cieux, a foreign student, started to perform miracles, including healings and throwing tennis matches. Now the school, the government and Denise herself are forced to scramble for damage control, not only with Madeleine but with her ex-boyfriend, Jack Arnold, itching for revenge, and her perennial enemy, the development heiress Terry Marlowe. Both disaster and triumph end up on everyone's plate in a world which is being rapidly reshaped both by and for the participants.< Less
The Island Chronicles 1: Paludavia By Don C. Warrington
eBook (ePub): $2.99
The first of The Island Chronicles, Paludavia (The Swamp Road) begins at the end of the one of the Island's bloodier wars, the war for Drahlan independence. Crown Prince George of Serelia (the... More > losers) comes for the independence ceremony. But he has another mission; suspecting that his old allies the Verecundans have an Island takeover plan, he enlists the assistance of Terry Marlowe, a Verecundan exile and Drahla's Royal Counsellor. He puts together a state visit team of himself, his wife Princess Darlene and Terry. What Terry does not know is that Darlene's brother, now dead, was the one who killed Terry's husband in war and murdered her infant son in a massacre. Now they not only have to deal with that revelation, but also with their discoveries concerning the left-wing Verecundans, facing the dilemma of how their relatively small and poor countries could effectively deal with a developed Verecunda. The solution of that dilemma and its aftermath is the book's stunning conclusion.< Less

This manual emphasizes the soils engineering aspects of road and airfield construction. The references give detailed information on other soils engineering topics that are discussed in general terms.... More > It also provides a discussion of the formation and characteristics of soil using the Unified System, and also information on AASHTO and the UDSA systems as well. It describes the compaction of soils and quality control, settlement and shearing resistance of soils, the movement of water through soils, frost action, and the bearing capacity of soils that serve as foundations, slopes, embankments, dikes, dams, and earth-retaining structures. This manual also describes the geologic factors that affect the properties and occurrences of natural mineral/soil construction materials used to build dams, tunnels, roads, airfields, and bridges. Finally, it has an excellent treatment of basic geology as it relates to soil mechanics, a subject not well covered in most soils texts.< Less
