Debra Speakes

Raised in the suburbs of Phoenix Arizona, Debra always wanted to have horses but nobody else in her family shared that dream. She spent her childhood reading about them and dreaming of the day when she would have horses of her own. "Tails" of a Suburban Cowgirl is the story of her quest to achieve her dream, and what happened to that dream after she did achieve it. Debra currently lives with her four horses, two dogs, three cats, two sheep and twelve chickens. The photo at the left is the author on her beloved mare, Sandy. Either the author or the horse was 31 when this picture was taken. The other was 44. You can decide which is which.

"Tails" of a Suburban Cowgirl
"Tails" of a Suburban Cowgirl is the true story of a little girl growing up in the suburbs of Phoenix, Arizona, with a deep love of horses and a family who couldn't care less about them. Yet over the years, she not only achieved her dream of having horses while still living in the city, but she eventually found her way to country living in a town sympathetic to her love of horses. This wonderful book is a must-read for any would-be cowgirl or cowboy stuck living in the city but who dreams of living the cowboy life. It's also a trip down memory lane for others who traveled the same path, achieving the dream despite the numerous obstacles that arise on the unlikely journey from stick horses to stock horses, from model horses to Morgan horses, from stuffed ponies to cow ponies.
