"With a little bit of common sense and a bit of knowledge gained from this book it's easy to take stock of what you have at hand and what you need to cheaply supplement your equipment with. Take a run through all the stuff in your house and build you a basic survival kit. You most likely have all the items you need scattered around in the shop or a junk drawer." Besides lots of useful ideas for gear and improvising to satisfy your needs in emergency situations, this book has loads of great tips and techniques on using common items, along with a few good pieces of quality gear worth purchasing, to catch game and fish, collect and purify water, start fires, provide shelter, cook and prepare foods, treat many types of injuries and illnesses, tell time and find direction, among other things. Usually there are several different ways of doing things that are explained in detail, often with drawings and photos. There is an extensive section on building and using various types of snares and deadfalls along with detailed instructions and tips on survival gardening, solar cooking, killing and dressing deer, making Pemmican, even making your own improvised clothes washing machine, and much more. This book is well worth the price and is a great addition to any survival library.
