Unit guide for Photographic Cultures, Level 2 unit in the BA (Hons)Digital Photography at the London South Bank University. This fall 2007/08 unit takes place within the self-publishing environment provided by lulu.com, and considers if this online print on demand network can be used for educational photo publishing projects, whilst researching its advantages and limitations in relation to other publishing models. To understand current print on demand photo publishing we study lulu.com, engaging with electronic developments in two main publishing genres - Photobooks, where the work’s primary message is carried by photographs; and - Collaborative photo magazines (photomags), where the networking situations are the organising principle behind the collecting and publishing of the photographic work. THIS IS AN UPLOADING EXERCISE.

Thomas Evans's Blog

  • Au Revoir Ladies And Gents

    2007 Dec 15

Well this is it - magazines and photobooks have been published, its been an interesting term! Although the products have been useful I hope we don't have another unit with POD as the focus - I feel like we have well and truly conquered the few core concepts about self publishing non-commercial products featuring our work. Have a good Christmas and New Year eveybody, particularly Paula - roll on 2008! This is Tom Evans signing off for the final time...

    Good night, Good night Everybody
    Everybody everywhere
    Good night.

  • Not Lovin' It (E-Tivity 11)

    2007 Dec 11

I have to say that my experience with Lulu has been mildly frustrating throughout the duration of this unit - while it is useful if you are making publications on a budget the quality is not really high enough in my opinion to consider seriously selling or promoting your work through its means of publishing. However, if you are happy with the quality and problems then I would maybe consider using the company again to produce more work.

    1. Digital Pedagogy
It is easier in my opinion to learn digital media practices on the Internet as opposed to the classroom or lecture hall - personally I am a more practical individual and feel the need to actively do something to learn effectively.

    2. Community Of Practice
Learning by way of a community has been great for this unit, though I have not myself benefited from being part of a community it has clearly been a help to some members of the class who find websites and concepts such as those we have been studying more difficult than the theoretical issues in photography.

    3.Vernacular Versus Academic Culture
I have found the vernacular process of learning for this unit much less useful - personally speaking I am from an academic background and have found it frustrating having to work on such 'underground projects' - I still feel much of the class have little knowledge of key concepts such as press releases and catalogue terminology, which I feel are fundamentally far more important to those working in the arts than what we have studied thus far.

    4. A Challenge To The Hierarchical Nature Of The Institution
Clearly there have been many success stories related to self publishing, and it is a great frame of mind to get into making work for the 'outside world' rather than simply just to get marks all the time.

    5. The Meaning Of Self-publishing:
Self publishing has ensured that power is in the hands of the people again, something any democratic individual would be pleased with. Artists can produce their own work and have full control over the final product, a benefit to a system that has for hundreds of years produced publications that only institutions had the power to create en mass.

    6. The Value Of Publishing As A Group
Networking has allowed the old saying "safety in numbers" to achieve another level of relevance - the larger the network the more individuals who are likely to view your work, and that can only be a good thing.

    8. POD Templates
While POD templates are great for users who have little technical experience with programs such as InDesign, I myself would always opt to learn the programs in order to gain full control over my final products. Often the POD templates can appear tacky and cheap, and I would rarely choose a pre-set design if I didn't already have the skills to avoid doing so.

    9. Lulu Compared To Other (Publishing) Social Network Sites
Other social networking sites feature the same kind of real time features that Lulu does but many offer better usability and are far more effective than other websites available.

  • I Prefer Punch (E-Tivity 09)

    2007 Dec 01

To begin a confession of sorts - we haven't actually gotten as far as producing a photomag dummy yet as we have been pontificating on the content/design/intent etc. until relatively recently which is of course of the upmost importance to the success of the project.

    01 Description Of Theme
Through Jessica's guidance we have etsablished that the magazine will be based around photo pooling from sites such as Flickr (i.e. predetermined pools of images that have already been grouped together as such).

    02 Frequency
In theory it will be a quarterly magazine although it is uncertain whether the project will continue following the production of this issue.

    03 Description Of Photography
In this particular issue we will be looking at submitted images of the contents of people's bags juxtaposed with the self portraits of those that have created them. Individuals will be contacted and permission sought regarding the inclusion of their material into our publication. We have selected based on the visual aesthetic of the photographs and have tried to select interesting portraits to go with the bag images.

    04 Description Of Text
There will be little text in the magazine, more a showcase and less a critique. Text for the cover has yet to be decided...

    05 Description Of Team Roles
So far there have been no assigned team roles - Jessica has been established creative lead in the group and chairs meetings and helps to make final decisions on debates and concerns but everything else is quite democratic.

    06 Description Of Design
We are all in the process of creating cover/interior design layouts as I type, and intend to select the best examples at the next meeting on Tuesday. We intend to use a standard magazine size (approximately A4) but this is still as yet undecided.

07 Relationship Between Online And Print Version
To date this has not yet been discussed in the group.

    08 POD
As a result of it's proven efficiency and cost effective nature, we have decided to use Lulu as our primary publisher: it also offers the correct size and binding options we are interested in at this stage in the magazine's development.
  • Many Links But No Princess... (E-Tivity 08)

    2007 Dec 01

I have gotten 'wired up' and registered for yet another website as a result of this unit - I find this quite frustrating as I do not like having so many accounts open on the net at any one time, its too confusing and not rewarding enough for my tastes! That said I have conceded to the E-Tivity and have bookmarked a bunch of pages for your viewing pleasure here. Please enjoy them.
  • Major Tom To Ground Control (E-Tivity 07)

    2007 Dec 01

Little to report on this weeks E-Tivity it must be said - it seems that there aren't many technical issues on the forum and those that are there have already been sorted in class/through MSN and the like! It seems to be a bit dead at the moment, maybe we just have quite a fast learning class?
  • Who Will Buy My Sweet Red Roses? (E-Tivity 06)

    2007 Dec 01

Please find my newly designed storefront here - quite snazzy don't you know. Also I have gotten around to submitting my book (No Reserve) to the group pool, there only seem to be a few there at the moment though...
  • "For 'Em" Forums (E-Tivity 05)

    2007 Dec 01

So I've joined the group forum and haven't been able to post any queries yet, Lulu seems to be more technically challenging than simply confusing. I've no doubt that this will prove valuable for those individuals who find Lulu and InDesign difficult from a practical stance.

My book for this unit has also finally been published, check it out here and maybe tell me what you think? It feels like it has taken forever...
  • The End Is Near

    2007 Nov 06

So I completed the latest e-tivity and have personalised the look of my storefront. I don't actually intend to sell my publications through Lulu in the end, I plan to sell them in person or through my own website: I don't like the lack of customisable features at Lulu and in my opinion it looks too cheap - Lulu is just a means of getting a physical product produced and not a way of publicising my work, I prefer to do this through exhibiting.
  • If Only The Booker Prize Included Non-Fiction... (E-Tivity 04)

    2007 Oct 28

I am going to develop a book that will be centered around my Society project from this time last year, in which I suggested that the style of photography found on websites like Ebay are specific in their aesthetic qualities and also demonstrate our almost fetishistic obsession with leaving biographical trails on the Internet through websites such as Ebay and more recently Facebook.

The images were posed photographs of objects personal to myself and composed in such a way that they would not look out of place on Ebay. To put this into context I propose to write a short foreword at the beginning of the book briefly explaining the reasons behind developing the project and how it has changed in my mind over the past year. I will take a few new photographs to 'flesh out' the narrative quality of the book, and will use simple layouts with some pages fully bled. Double spreads will consist of closely cropped images, possibly blurred to emphasise the aspect of the Internet. They will be presented as very much a group, but also a series simultaneously, that is to say each image will lend itself to other images in the publication.

I am hoping to create a book with as many pages as possible to develop the feeling of an archive, depending on how many new photographs I can produce, and the 9"X7" landscape formatting of the pages themselves will allow for wide images to be bled across a double spread with as little loss of image down the spine as possible. The typeface will follow the fonts featured on my website to bring the two together and develop a sense of unity to my work. Below are the images of my book dummy, notably the style of the textual pages and also the layout. In the final there will be no white borders to the large images, they will be fully bled over the page.

I'm quite looking forward to receiving the publication once it has been printed, as I have been meaning to develop a book from this project for the past year or so. I hope someone actually buys it though... $-)

    In summary:

    Title: Unreserved
Layout: Fully bled double spreads and single pages, individual smaller images
    Size: 9"X7" Landscape
Pages: As many as possible to develop the sense of an archive
    Binding: Perfect binding
Text: Titles/Foreword/List Of Works (Eurostyle and Systema throughout)
