Composer Troy Wayne graduated from the New England Conservatory, earning his Bachelors, Masters and Graduate Diploma while studying with mentor Malcolm Peyton. After spending a year studying with Lukas Foss in Boston, Mr. Wayne moved to Houston in 2001 where he continued graduate studies at the Shepherd School of Music with composer Anthony Brandt. His catalogue includes two multimedia works for orchestra with narration and visual art, three percussion concertos, choruses, art songs, and numerous chamber works. His music has been performed by the New England Conservatory Symphony Orchestra and Contemporary Ensemble, the Shepherd School Percussion Ensemble, the Woodlands Symphony and has written for actress Rachel Buchman; Heather Kellgreen, principle harp of the Tulsa Symphony; and Samuel Getchell, principle trombone of the Pittsburgh Opera. The past few months have been extremely busy for Mr. Wayne. In addition to studying and teaching at the Shepherd School, his Refractions of a Song by Lukas Foss was premiered by the Shepherd School Percussion Ensemble and the Novus trombone quartet in April. Also premiered by the Shepherd School Percussion Ensemble was Mr. Wayne's arrangement of the Fugue from Samuel Barber's "Piano Sonata," prior to which he gave a pre-concert lecture entitled "The Percussion Writing of Samuel Barber." Last March Mr. Wayne heard the premiere of "Ghost Stories" op. 24 for cello and celesta. His current projects include a set of organ preludes for organist Virginia Nance, a new work for violin, bassoon, percussion, and narrator based on stories by Belloc commissioned by Rachel Buchman, and a string quartet arrangement of Bartók's "For Children" for young players. Additionally, Mr. Wayne is writing a textbook on the fundamentals of music geared towards teaching college non-music majors. He is currently an Adjunct Professor of Music at Houston Community College.

Print: $9.04 An atmospheric and reflective piece. Explores sonorities of a monochomatic ensemble. Glass Flows (“flows” as a verb) was originally a piece for double choruses of mixed voices on the Lux Æterna text. After a reading by the strings of the New England Conservatory Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Tamara Brooks, the piece was later orchestrated for full orchestra (at the suggestion of Malcolm Peyton - who was able to pursuade me it was doable) and came to be “Susan,” the 4th movement of the ballet Mind Fields. Print: $9.03 Susan is the third movement from the ballet "Mind Fields" which is based on and merges music with the visual art of Jacek Yerka and the fiction of Harlan Ellison. When performed with narrator, the music is framed by the first and last paragraphs of the story allowing the music to flow from and with the text. When performed without narration, Susan is a smooth and flowing klangfarbenmelodie which wordlessly retains the sense of the story structure. For score and audio samples http://www.troywayne.com

Print: $9.28 Duration: ca. 2:30. This fanfare is intended to be performed antiphonally (though it may be performed in traditional quartet seating arrangement). Each player should be in a corner of the performance space to form a square. Ideally, the two player at the back of the hall should be in the balcony. The intent is to create a large audience-encompassing space. As long as the players are arranged consecutively 1 – 4 it does not matter in which corner player 1 stands. A conductor may be needed to execute the piece in this fashion.
Performable in the following combinations:
4 trumpets in C and 4 trombones /
4 trumpets in C /
4 trombones /
4 horns in F.
Antiphonal Fanfare op. 10 was first performed by the New England Conservatory Honors Trombone Quartet in Jordan Hall, Boston 1997.
Score contains full scores for the octet and quartet versions and their parts.

Print: $16.40 Dramatic showcase for solo mallets. The first movement is a ritornello (allegro barbaro) for roto toms and large orchestra. The second movement, Romanza, for solo vibraphone and reduced orchestra, is a lush and melodic homage to Samuel Barber. The solo vibraphone weaves its way in and out of chamber ensemble combinations with solos in the orchestra. The first and last sounds of the solo are a slow bowed melody. The last movement is for five octave marimba and large orchestra. It is multi metered in alternating bars of 3/4 and 3/8 and features an accompanied cadenza which culminates in a frenzied improv passage. The scherzo was first performed in concert on February 22, 1997 in the New England Conservatory’s Brown Hall in Boston by percussionist Jeremy Friedman and members of the NEC Symphony Orchestra. The audio excerpts are from a reading by the NEC Symphony Orchestra with Jeremy Friedman, percussion and Steven Lipset, conductor. Score and audio samples: www.troywayne.com

Print: $7.04 Five miniatures for piano solo. Duration: ca. 6:00. A fun suite of little piano pieces with a variety of character. Includes a Baroque minuet, a 12 tone etude, a drunken dance, and more. Character is extremely important with these pieces. There is little in this set that can be described as "subtle" and the performer should play on that. I encourage you to keep the following in mind - pretentious, mocking, silly, bi polar, sarcastic, pompous, manic. Assign them where you will. The score is dedicated to composer Joe Johnson who first performed it in Boston University's Marsh Chapel April 30, 2001.

Print: $9.07 These pieces were composed while studying with Lukas Foss in Boston and are about fun. Nothing serious here. More “why” than “how.” The original piano suite was written for my friend and colleague composer Joe Johnson. This arrangement was made in the fall of 2001 for the Shepherd School Percussion Ensemble. I. Obsession is an ostinato driven 12 tone piece. II. Crack Allemande is an over-paced, over-ornamented baroque dance. III. The J.D. Stumble is a popular American college dance. IV. Brain Itchies is a morbid baroque minuet suitable for any funeral. V. Grunties is an abrasive assault on both audience and instruments alike with a rubber chicken ending.

Print: $16.20 Energetic, four movement work for percussion ensemble (10 players plus piano/celesta) and trombone quartet. The first movement is an orchestration of Foss' song "Sonnet: Life's Arc". The second is a fast, rhythmicly exciting double canon. The trombones are silent this movement. The third is a quiet, atmospheric, layered piece that uses a bowed vibraphone choir as a backdrop for a bell trio (glockenspiel, vibraphone and celesta) and trombone solo. The fourth movement is a bright, flashy finale - a classically styled variation on the song which includes a chime solo. This piece was first performed April 15, 2004 in Stude Concert Hall, Houston by the Shepherd School Percussion Ensemble and Novus with Brian Vogel conducting. Print: $32.83 Arranged for cello and percussion quartet from the original for cello and celesta, this is a suite of miniature tone poems simular in intent to a work from a couple years back (The Martian Chronicles op. 20) for harp and percussion. Both works are musical interpretations of short stories in the form of a suite of miniatures. Ghost Stories, though, is a little more involved structurally containing two sets of three miniatures framed by three mini-miniatures ('microtures' perhaps?) - a Prelude for solo celesta, an Interlude for solo cello and a Postlude for both instruments together. Ghost Stories continues a series of chamber music pieces on literary works by writers such as Ray Bradbury, Harlan Ellison, and Edward Gorey.

In the tradition of Samuel Barber these songs, though with orchestra, retain their chamber music character calling for a recital voice with a minimum of vibrato. The songs are intensly melodic and the orchestral parts though not often technically demanding require the most sensative ear for ensemble. Texts by Joyce, Dickinson, and Yeats. The "Four Orchestrated Songs" were first performed May 4, 1999 in Brown Hall at the New England Conservatory with Graham Fandrei, bass-baritone and Shawn Crouch conducting members of the New England Conservatory Symphony Orchestra.
