Lulu Studio Photo Books must have a minimum of 20 pages. The prices below include those 20 pages + the binding fee. Each additional page after 20 costs $0.50 per page. Photo books created in Lulu Studio use a higher quality ink and paper than our regular books.

Note: If a licensed image from our image collection is used in a photo book, Lulu automatically adds the cost of the image to the photo book's manufacturing price; the license fee applies every time a licensed image is placed in the photo book, even if it is the same image.

Lulu Studio™ works best with JPG images with a resolution between 300 and 600 dpi. You may also upload GIF and PNG file formats.

If you are modifying a book that you created using the old photo book wizard, you can use JPG, GIF, PNG, or TIFF files. Image resolution should be between 300 and 600 dpi for best print quality.

If you are using Lulu Studio™

When you place an image into a Lulu Studio™ book and the image has a resolution lower than 300 dpi, you will see a red circle with an exclamation mark (!) on the image. This resolution error icon warns you that the printed image probably will be coarse and pixilated.

If your original image was within the optimum resolution range of 300 to 600 dpi, check the dimensional print size. Lulu Studio™ stretches or squeezes images proportionately so that at least one dimension fits within the template frame and none of the frame background shows around the image edges. In this process, a small image loses resolution when it is stretched to fit while a large one increases resolution when it is squeezed.

To solve this, try using a smaller frame to hold the image. Alternately, you can change the image size or resolution in your image authoring application and try again.

If you are revising a photo book created in the old wizard

The resolution error icon, illustrated at left, means you have attempted to use an image with a resolution of less than 300 dpi. The printed image often looks coarse and pixilated, so we call this the "ugly" icon.

If you are using Lulu Studio™

Pull project files into Lulu Studio™ from one of three places, using the Images dialog within the application. The dialog is one of the initial steps when you create a new photo book, but you can click the Get Images button in the working window. Click the appropriate link at the top of the dialog to call any of the three places.

• Upload Images from your computer, using the Browse button.
• License Professional Images from our licensed image database. Each time you use a licensed image, the base manufacturing cost of your book increases by a small amount.
• Collect from My Lulu Images to select pictures already stored in your My Files.
  

If you are revising a photo book created in the old wizard

Use the Turbo Uploader to add images to your existing photo book project. To use it, you'll need to have Java enabled. If you don't have Java installed on your computer, you can dowload it here.

Select all the image files you want to use in your photo book, and let the Turbo Uploader do the rest. You can even select a whole folder! If you don't have many photos to upload (for example, you're mostly finished with your Photo Book but want to add a few more images), you can use the regular Upload tab. You'll have to select each image file individually when using the regular Upload.

Lulu Studio™ provides prepared themes for your photo book. Themes include the following elements.

• Front and back covers.
• Internal pages with a variety of layouts. Each page layout features frames in various orientations and sizes to hold your images; some pages include areas for text so you can provide captions if you wish.
• Licensed fonts.
• Color palette options.

How do I use a Lulu Studio™ theme?

• When you first open Lulu Studio™, the wizard prompts you to select a theme. You may change your selection once you are in the working window by selecting Change Book Theme... from the Format menu.
• The Page Layouts section of the working window provides images of the available page layouts. Select the working thumbnail of the page you want to change, and click the layout image you want. (The working thumbnails are the large page images in the left of the wizard window.)
• To place images, click the image in the Images section that you want to use, then drag it into a frame on the working thumbnail. Click and drag to place the image within the frame; click and drag an image away from its frame to remove it..

Lulu's old photo book wizard provides an Autofill feature to help you add images to your book. When you select Autofill, the wizard adds pages to your book using the selected template and filling the picture cells with unused images from your Photo Basket.

The number of pages the wizard adds corresponds to the number of photos you have left to add, rounded up to the nearest multiple of 4 to satisfy our printer's signature requirements.

If I use Autofill, will I lose the work I have already done on my Photo Book? No, Autofill only begins adding pages and photos after the last page where you placed a photo. The pages you already created are not affected.

Can I continue to edit my Photo Book pages after selecting Autofill? Yes. You can still drag and drop photos, change templates, and add or subtract pages after using the Autofill feature.

Does Lulu Studio™ provide Autofill? No, Lulu Studio™ does not provide an Autofill function.

Lulu Studio™ does not provide a Trim Alert icon.

If you are revising a photo book created in the old wizard

The "trim alert" icon, illustrated at left, means one of two things.

• If you drop an image onto a photo book template and this icon appears, you selected a template with an image that bleeds to the edge of the page. This does not indicate an error; it's a reminder that anything within 0.125" of the top or bottom of the image or within 0.25" of the leading (non-bound) edge may be trimmed. If you want to be certain that your image will not be trimmed at all, select a template without the words "full page" or "full width."
• If you type a caption into a photo book template and the icon appears, your caption will not fit in the text block you have selected. Choose a smaller font size or shorten your text to be sure that your caption will display properly.
