This is the book that home inspectors have wanted someone to write. It is perfect for the person wanting to pass a licensing test and for the practicing inspector (like me) who needs more background info. on a defect we find. Barker writes just like we inspectors do in our reports. He describes things with the correct terms and delves into the history of a particular defect and tells the reader why something the defect needs to be fixed or monitored. He also tells you what most home inspectors do and what things lie out-of-scope. Reading this book, I am amazed at how much we must know and how complex our work is. I appreciate Barker's academic level of knowledge, his researching the current and past Codes and his way of reminding us how building science and building practices have changed. This book is truly encyclopedic, up to date, and well worth the cost.
