Although I enjoyed the novel, I don't think this sequel quite lives up to the high standard set by the first Dossouye book. I think that the story strays from the sword & sorcery roots of Dossouye and Imaro, and into the realm of epic fantasy, with its world-shaking good vs. evil struggle. Personally, I think that Charles Saunders is at his very best when writing short stories and novellas, which feel like a more natural format for the Sword & Sorcery genre. I'm eagerly looking forward to the next Dossouye novel, and hoping that it returns to the sword & sorcery roots of Saunders' previous work.

I had the privilege of reading Dossouye II in manuscript form and thoroughly enjoyed it. Unlike Dossouye I, this book was written as a full length novel and it shows. Charles has the unique ability to inject depth and emotion to his characters, which lifts his books above most heroic fiction tales. Once again Dossouye and her war bull captured my imagination. I'm already anticipating a book three. Sword and Soul forever!
