It's Old School in both the best and the worst of the term. The best: It's imaginative, ingenious, immediately useful at the table and seems like it would be a lot of fun to use. The worst: It's sloppy, ugly, overpriced and some parts are completely unusable. It's got few (but not none) actual examples of how to use it in play and much of it isn't explained very clearly. But at the same time it's an excellent approach to handling non-combat NPC interaction without GM's fiat. I'm very glad I bought it and I will definitely be using it as the basic for my own house rules. So while not polished, it's still a gem of an idea that's the best treatment of relationships and social dynamics I've ever seen or heard of. So if that's of interest to you, even at this outrageous price, I recommend it.

There is useful material here to be sure. The best stuff consists of some very inventive riffs on the standard 2d6 "reaction table." Random NPC trait tables are hardly a revolutionary concept, but the ones included here are wide-ranging and imaginative. I did not find the "social combat" material (extrapolated from the "subdual damage" system described in various editions of D&D) very compelling, but only a few pages are devoted to the subject, so that doesn't affect my overall rating of the product too much. If this product were priced competitively with other OSR supplements, I would not hesitate to give it a hearty recommendation. But had I to do it over again, I'm by no means certain I would spend $30 to own this product (or $20 for a PDF, for that matter). If you don't have to worry about a gaming budget and are interested in the concept of the "gameable NPC", then I would say go for it. Otherwise, well... I don't expect every product... More > to give you as much bang for your gaming buck as something like "Stonehell Dungeon", but there are just so many ways to make your dollar stretch further in the OSR marketplace.< Less
