"Throwing Myself at the Ground (and Missing)" There is a lot of cynical and protest poetry being published these days. They are good and important reads, but they must make a point and have impact to be effective. Brien seamlessly achieves both in his debut book of poetry. Brien delves into society and himself with his unsweetened observations. He makes it clear that he is intolerant of the shiny lacquer of lies that so often coats the truth when it comes to corporations, politics, even the open mic poetry events he participates in. Brien does not have an entirely dismal outlook, however. He shares the intense feelings he experiences in the soul of jazz and true friendships. Brien develops several themes in Throwing Myself at the Ground (and Missing). "An Evening With a Good Book" is a key example of Brien's making the most of an unwanted life. In "The Self Proclaimed Genuis", he gets at the root of his sarcasm: vulnerability. "America Can You Hear... More > Me" is a protest poem like no other, calling out the other protesters to quit the spin and see the bloody truth. "Short Bursts" gleams, reading like spasms between heartbeats while lying in bed alone at night. This piece tells us who Brien really is and why he thinks the way he does. Brien's work is well worth settling into. Each reading reveals another layer of observation until at last, only the raw nerve is exposed.< Less
