MOZART REIMAGINED: A DELIGHTFUL ROMP THROUGH THE WONDROUS AND DELICIOUS GARDENS OF MOZART'S OPERAS There are Mozart books and there are Mozart books. Now there is an absolutely indispensable Mozart Book: to wit, Tyson Vick’s extraordinary, innovative, and kaleidoscopically beautiful Mozart Reimagined, a delightful romp through the wondrous and delicious gardens of Mozart’s operas. Wolfgang Mozart (1756-1791) has been the subject of more biographies, criticisms and analyses than any other composer in the western Canon. Not only was Mozart a genius of symphonic, chamber music and concerto forms, he was one of the greatest of opera composers. Mozart loved the human voice more than anything else, and he has given posterity a lifetime of joy in listening to the voice in his operas. In Mozart Reimagined, Tyson Vick brilliantly and, at times, hilariously, summarizes each of Mozart’s 22 operas and operatic torsos, as well as providing information and insight into several other rare and... More > delicious gems (such as the cantata Davidde Penitente, and the little known operatic pastiche, Der Stein der Weisen (The Philosopher’s Stone) with a libretto by Die Zauberflote’s Emanuel Schickaneder, for which Mozart wrote some lovely and funny arias (a Cat duet anyone?) For each Mozart opera, Vick provides his own unique, yet historically informed, take on its plot. But that’s just the beginning! Vick wonderfully accompanies his knowledgeable and irreverent prose for each opera with a stunning series of amazing color photographs. Let me rephrase that: with a stunning series of Truly Amazing Photographs! Each opera is given its librettist, premiere date and venue, a “Tysonian” synopsis, and every one is also adorned with vibrantly colorful and laser sharp photographs of beautiful women and handsome men dressed in outrageously wild and fascinating period costumes, staged in clever sets, and with spot-on designs. It is hard to describe the intensely real, and at once wondrous fantasy world that Vick conjures for each of the photographs that accompany the operatic storylines: over-the-top dresses, enormous hats, insanely brilliant and baroque dresses. Lewis Caroll, JR Tolkien, Walt Disney and Mozart himself would be proud. You can’t begin to understand how unique, compelling and addicting this book is, a book that will surely stand beside the great classic Mozart opera treatises: Angermuller, Heartz, Hunter, and Cairns; and now we have Vick. Bravo Tyson !< Less
