VisuaLingual

VisuaLingual is the all-media design studio of Maya Drozdz and Michael Stout. Our practice operates on a passion for the theory and research that translates to the visual language inscribed onto paper, screen, and the environment. Through VisuaLingual Books, we publish experimental and autonomous printed matter.

Outside In
Outside In: An International Poster Exhibit is a full-color catalog of posters by 25 designers worldwide who participated in a travelling exhibit addressing the impact of cultural difference on contemporary design practice. Its goals were twofold: to focus on the role of the outsider as a visual practitioner with heightened sensitivity, and to promote gallery-based graphic design as a legitimate element of professional practice. The book includes an essay written by the curator and documents all the posters from the exhibit. Participating designers: Bjorn Akselsen, Frederick Bower, Matthew Cassity, Jaewon Chong, Eric Cruz, Maya Drozdz, Boris Dworschak, Kenneth FitzGerald, Justin Gagne, Heiko Hoos, Catherine Jo Ishino, Esen Karol, garland kirkpatrick, Ali Madad, John McVey, Arjen Noordeman, Serdar Omer, Vesna Petrovic, Ambica Prakash, Florencia Reina, Sarah Smith, Myung Jin Song, Annette Stahmer, Michael Stout, and Andrea Wilkinson.

Compound Alchemy
Tucked away on the edge of Cincinnati’s Over-the-Rhine neighborhood is a garden affectionately known to its residents as “the compound.” Two buildings share this garden and its koi pond, hammock, patio, fire pit, and the paths that wind through its wild plantings, sharing space with an array of found objects and art, seemingly chaotic but, in fact, carefully arranged into complex compositions of color and texture. This book serves as a photographic record of this idiosyncratic garden, as experienced in August 2006.
