Welcome to Zalman Studios Online Store, Hosted by Lulu.com!
Here is a collection of music for flutists. Included are study works, original works for flute and
various instruments (including flute ensembles), and new editions of classic 19th century pieces unavailable anywhere else. There are also free downloads, so have fun! Check back often, because I'm adding new things all the time.
Important note!
One little detail about ordering music that you should keep in mind: Parts are separate items from
scores. This means that when you purchase (or download) a piece for, say, two flutes and piano,
you need to order the parts and score separately. Lulu is working on a way to link things
together, but in the meantime make sure you order the parts. One advantage of this is that you can
replace a part that you might have lost!

Print: $9.33 The task of transcribing a work of this monumental scope and subtlety has been approached with the utmost of meticulous care. The original
manuscript in Bach's handwriting is the sole source material used in preparing this transcription.
This is a work that, in spite of the transcendental demands that it makes on the player's breath and technique, not to mention
musical soul, should be on the study desk of every flutist.

Print: $9.03 Dedications: A Chanukah Medley for Flute Quintet is scored for a Flute ensemble consisting of three Concert Flutes in C, an Alto Flute, and a Bass Flute.
It incorporates two lively settings of the traditional Jewish Chanukah blessing "Al ha-Nisim" (For All the Miracles), a setting of "L'vivot" (about making l'vivot, or latkes, a type of potato pancake traditionally enjoyed during the holiday) that evokes a little bit of village life in Eastern Europe. These tunes are framed by a familiar melody by Mendelssohn for "Nerot Dolkim" (Candles Glimmering), a traditional Chanukah hymn.
Players and audiences alike will enjoy the vivid, dance-like rhythms and lyric contrasts of this musical portrayal of a joyful holiday.
This piece is suitable for intermediate to early advanced players.
The parts are available as a download here.

Print: $13.13 Notturno for Piano-Forte and Flute is an attractive work by the famous 19th century pianist and pedagogue Friedrich Kalkbrenner (1784-1849). In the form of an Introduction and Rondo, this duo is in a very accessible and tuneful early Romantic style. It is at times rather challenging to both performers.
The range of the flute part is nearly the same as that of the modern instrument, showing the influence of the great English virtuoso Charles Nicholson (1795-1837), to whom the work was dedicated. It was written during the composer's sojourn in London in the years between 1814-1823.
During this time, both Kalkbrenner and Nicholson were two of the most prominent performer/composers of their day.
This is the printed score. The flute part is available as a download here.

Print: $9.03 In the 19th century no opera composer was more popular than Rossini, and transcriptions of his works for various instruments abound even to this day. Many of these arrangements were intended for the amateur music lover, as is the case with this one.
Benoit Tranquille Berbiguier, the famous 19th century flute teacher, wrote the present arrangement. Nathan Zalman has prepared a new edition, correcting the markings to correspond with the most authoritative early orchestral score, and fixing several errors and omissions.
This work is a real delight to play, and quite a sight-reading challenge for students.

Print: $9.63 Prayer, Meditation, and Play: an Anthology for Solo Flute contains seven pieces in a variety of styles and levels of challenge for the flutist.
They share aspects of prayer, meditation, and play, as well as improvisational and dance elements.
They vary in style from Hassidic to modal to impressionistic to the abstract.
All of them come from my meditation practice, involving extended solitary improvisation - a kind of non-verbal prayer. Several of them are actual transcriptions of the improvisations themselves.
It is my hope is that these pieces will resonate with you as they have with me, and that they will inspire your own meditations and personal enrichment.

Print: $9.03 “Second Pastoral Suite” is a set of six pieces for solo flute, intended for a somewhat more advanced player than its counterpart, “First Pastoral Suite.” Its six movements are evocative rather than programmatic in character. For me, the music evokes memories and associations not only from my childhood but from later life.
The work as a whole makes frequent use of harmonics and harmonic tremolando.
1. “A Last Swim Before Summer’s End”
2. “Drowsy Thoughts in a Field of Sunflowers”
3. “Cat and Mouse Games”
4. “Anxious Interlude”
5. “Singing Into the Starry Night”
6. “Puddles, Rain, Galoshes, and Games of Tag”

Print: $17.73 This book of studies is designed for the intermediate to advanced player. It contains a wealth of fundamental technical and tone exercises presented in a unique way.
This book is to be used as a practice resource. There are tone and embouchure studies, each with a specific purpose. There are also many technical exercises, some of which push the envelope, as it were, of harmonic and scalar possibilities. Still others are based explicitly on the concepts of others, to extend them and distill their essence, and, in some cases, to develop them a step or two further. Practice suggestions for each study are included.
