Squantum, Massachusetts

Life and Times on the Peninsula

ByRachel Squires Bloom

Usually printed in 3 - 5 business days
Squantum, once a barrier island, has a unique character. Native people hunted and fished here in summer, early settlers farmed the land, and 19th century leisure-seekers summered in its inns and resorts. In 1907 Squantum began a transition from summer community and farmland to year-round locale. Early residents were independent, while at the same time supporting and relying on neighbors. One road leads in and out of a square mile of land that is a playground for children and a haven for adults. This is the account of Squantum's evolution, from pre-19th century uses, through early residents and businesses, to the present day. This history is drawn from archives, newspapers, and from individual accounts which, while unique in detail, share the common bond of committed citizens.
