On Smithworld, a planet that takes up the same physical space as earth, just two dimensions over on the right, a newly emerged Smithling named Jennifer Alice Shoebutton is about to begin the next phase of her life. She is leaving the only home she has ever known, a government orphanage, and traveling to the Woodstocking Farm for mentally lackadaisical young women to become an agrarian engineer’s life companion, which is just a fancy way of saying farmer’s wife. Jennifer Alice embarks on her new life with good intentions, but perdition’s highway is thickly paved with the bones of the victims of the well intentioned. This is the story of the mostly unwanted adventures of Jennifer Alice Shoebutton as she discovers that life on the farm is very different from life in the orphanage. Along the way, she learns about her true nature, which leads to run-ins with the Mystic Pie Society, the Daughters of Gloria, and the Federal Police.
