The book is an autobiographical journey titled "From Prison to Purpose: The Journey of Everton." It captures the story of a man raised in poverty by his grandmother in Kingston, Jamaica, where he had to grow up quickly, hustling on the streets to support himself and his family. The narrative explores Everton's early life, marked by hardships, and his eventual migration to Canada, where he experienced culture shock, family separation, and the pull of street life. These challenges led him down a dark path, resulting in his incarceration for nearly 16 years.
The core of the book revolves around transformation—how Everton turned his prison sentence into an opportunity to educate himself and redefine his life. Despite pressures to join gangs, he refused and focused on his education, eventually becoming a success story within the Canadian correctional system. After his release, he requested to be deported back to Jamaica, where he found a new purpose in teaching, working with the Ministry of Education.
The story draws parallels between Everton’s journey and that of Vybz Kartel, the well-known dancehall artist, who also served a life sentence. Both men, though imprisoned, found ways to keep their voices alive—Kartel through music, and Everton through education and mentoring.
